In this distinctive blog post, I delve into the distinctive moments when we escape the routine of daily life and embark on new directions. Picture a travelogue that not only captures the essence of our destinations but also delves into the delightful intricacies of organizing life on the road with our furry companions, Abby and Artie. Join me as I share insights on seamlessly preparing a delectable canine menu amidst the diverse landscapes of the world. Our recent stop? Thessaloniki, Greece – a picturesque seaside town adorned with lush parks and an expansive promenade, a haven for our canine friends! 🐶😁
Let me express my gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by the Greeks towards our four-legged companions. It truly enhances the travel experience.
Getting our two adorable pups ready for this adventure was surprisingly straightforward: passports, two beds, and a set of bowls. Gone are the days of lugging sacks of food and treats, nearly eclipsing space in the car trunk. 😂😂
Upon reaching our destination, a fully furnished apartment with a well-equipped kitchen awaited us. Spotting a nearby grocery store, I made a mental note to explore it. Luckily, we found rice in the apartment, a pleasant surprise! 😊 After unloading our luggage, I hastened to the store, which conveniently stocked everything we needed.
My eyes immediately landed on a cauliflower – a vegetable often overlooked but packed with nutritional benefits. Not only is it appetizing for both humans and canines, but it’s also rich in vitamins B1, B2, and C. Boasting a mere 4% sugars and proteins, with 7-8% dry matter, cauliflower contributes to high-nutrient dishes. Its mild taste, pleasing texture, and low calorie count make it ideal for addressing obesity issues and a perfect ingredient for diet menus. With high fiber and water content, it keeps the body hydrated and satiated. What’s noteworthy about cauliflower is its choline content! This water-soluble nutrient actively supports the nervous system, brain function, muscle activity, liver health, metabolism, and energy levels – an indispensable addition to our culinary choices.
And how could I resist the allure of zucchini, a staple in Greek cuisine with its myriad health benefits? Rich in antioxidants, aiding in the fight against free radicals, preventing certain cancers, cardiovascular issues, and skin disorders. Its high water content promotes better digestion, and it contributes to lowering blood sugar levels. Additionally, the presence of lutein positively impacts bone and eye health.
And so, the task of selecting the perfect meat for our holiday dog menu fell upon me. 😃 While the options were abundant, I ultimately placed my bet on turkey meat. Why, you ask? Well, it’s a powerhouse of nutrition – high in protein and low in fat. Packed with potassium and selenium, crucial for combating oxidative stress (a known contributor to diabetes risk). Loaded with an array of vitamins from groups B, A, E, and PP, along with essential elements like phosphorus, tryptophan, potassium, zinc, and folic acid. However, the deciding factor in favor of turkey was its easily digestible protein content, perfect for aiding recovery after bouts of increased physical activity. And with Abby and Artie geared up for long walks, it was an ideal choice! On my way out of the store, I couldn’t resist grabbing an apple as a treat – a favorite of theirs, and we all know how beneficial they are. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”! 🙌🙌

Now, don’t get the wrong idea; my holiday wasn’t centered around cooking. Upon returning to the apartment, I swiftly whipped up a fantastic menu for Abby and Artie within an hour, while my husband took a well-deserved rest from the journey.
You can find the recipe, you know where…

Thessaloniki was a gem of a town, offering delightful strolls, tempting culinary delights, and pet-friendly establishments at every turn. A particular favorite of ours was Gregory’s bakery, where our furry companions not only brought immense joy but were even treated to ham! By the end of our stay, we had become regulars, slightly swayed by their kindness. We nearly succumbed to purchasing a carpet – all because, while admiring it in the window, the salesman emerged to revel in the dogs’ company. 😂😂 Traveling with a dog certainly yields amusing moments, albeit positively so! Cooking for them during our stay was a breeze. Give it a try.
The ensuing two days unfolded in blissful long walks, covering around 15 km each day. We returned home content, infused with positive vibes, sunshine, and a good kind of exhaustion. Abby and Arti had their nutritionally balanced menu, meeting their daily needs, and we had the entire gastronomic array of Thessaloniki at our disposal.

In essence, travel, relish the moments, take leisurely walks, shower love on your pets, and cook up healthy meals for them. Life is indeed wonderful!
